I have Gas boiler steam unit that is keeping everyone up at night> there is a lot of banging going on with the pipes. Does anyone know how to stop this?

  1. There also may not be a return pipe, for the condensation.

    Google “Water Hammer”

You shuold be able to get a free qoute (make sure they agree up front on the freeness) from a plumber

  2. Rick’s advice is good. For complete troubleshooting, go to heatinghelp.com. Other possible culprits include dirty water in the boiler (be sure to drain once every week or so while the boiler is running, until it shuts off), the size of the vent on the radiator, loss of heat due to lack of insulation on the steam pipes in the cellar.

  3. As Rick said, tilt radiator towards pipe. Also, keep radiator either completely OPEN or completely CLOSED. From what my plumber tells me, when it’s half open the water also gets trapped etc. Open them up to get the water out of the radiators.

  4. Often this is because the condensed water in the radiator is not draining back. Check your radiators to be sure that they are pitched to drain back into the system. Shim the far side of the radiator so it will drain right.
