In 2002 we paid $10K for a 32 foot beam installation done by Valoroso & Sons.

That’s not my house! It’s a picture of what I’m looking to do (add steel beam).
The joists are cut (in this project that I took the picture from) for installation of a new steel center stair.
Good news is your joists look like they are in amazingly good condition. Why do they only go 1/2 way across the house though?
I’d call Sarta Iron works (718) 331-2943. Its a father/son business (the son is a architect, very good btw). Ive used them on a few projects and they really have a great attitude and easy to talk/work with.
In smaller width brownstones (less than 18′ or 17′) most don’t have the big center beam and are just supported by joists anchored into the party (side) walls.
“Required” is a loaded word as it is only required if the floors in a house without one start to sag, slope, etc.
Also, 4:41pm “Brooklynnative” … that was a stupid comment.
At what brownstone width is a main beam like this required? I owned a 16.67 x 45 brownstone (lot size) and the joists were only supported at the ends by the foundation.

I did a similar swap using a licensed contractor. Some temp supports were erected and the swap occured without a hitch. Happy to pass along their info.
