Just had a independece boiler put in . the unit is steam heat. the plumbers told me the unit is a self cleaning boiler that needs no draining of water i do nothing at all. Then i was told by another boiler maintance proffesional that i do have to drain the boiler and refill with water. The unit has a self water feeder. I just want to know if i should drain this boiler or do nothing. Any help appreciated greatly.

  1. Ronman–there is no such thing as a self cleaning boiler. I’m a wholsaler of Burnham boilers and sell quite alot of Burnham Independance boilers. You HAVE to blow down the boiler periodically. I reccomend during the heating season to check your water levels at least once a week and blow down once a week. You should only drain off enough water until it gets clear. Don’t dump too much at one time. Always check your automatic water feeder to make sure it’s putting the right amount of water into the boiler. You should also have a heating contractor come in once a year to do a maintenance/checkup before the heating season starts. Blowing down the boiler periodically will prolong the life of your boiler tremendously. Think of it as an engine like you would your car. How long would your car(if you have one) last if you didn’t do periodic maintenance on it?

  2. radiators rust and new boilers have grease inside when new. routine draining and refilling is required (each season or twice a season depending on the color of the water). I’m not an expert, but have experienced this numerous time personallhy.
