another question about parking

I’ve been meaning to ask about this. Given the prior post, now might be a good time. I recently purchased a house with a large enough front yard for parking. I have mixed feelings about converting the front of the house to parking, but the proximity of my place to Fulton street makes parking a huge hassle. Anyway, there just also happens to be an existing, hinged gate in the front… Does anyone know how I would go about converting the front into a legal driveway? My understanding is that it’s not that difficult if there’s an existing, legal (filed) driveway already on the block. But I don’t know which city agency to start with. thanks, Brownstoners.

If your lot is less than 40 feet wide it is illegal. Check the zoning commission statement. Illegal curbcuts are subject to fines.
It’s your property and if you want to put in a driveway, that is your choice to do so. Don’t listen to these commenters that say it’s wrong or tacky.
OP here. I’d a daily Brownstoner blog-reader so I expected some of the standard strident, judgmental and/or puritanical responses to my question. I also hoped for information which I got, thanks.
What’s rude is to call people tacky, or worse, in the case of the “other” parking thread, to post a picture of someone’s house and their address (!) pointing out very publicly something that could easily get them in trouble. THAT is the fastest and surest way to destroy Brooklyn’s neighborhood vitality.
Just file an application. There is nothing rude about creating a driveway if it is legally allowed. Who defines exactly what is rude? You could always install a crane in your yard to lift your car over the parked car in front of your house…
obviously you dont read this blog much. your asking the wrong crowd. plus it’s just tacky.
Please don’t do this. It’s rude to your neighbors and destroys neighborhood vitality. Have you considered getting rid of your car instead?
Go to nyc.gov and look for curb-cut permit and applicable rules before you piss-off your neighbors.
