We’re moving to Prospect Heights next week (yay!) and it’ll be my first experience hiring movers (or hiring movers with actual money, and not just unlimited beer…)

What’s an appropriate percentage for a cash tip for a mover? 20 percent? And if so, does each mover get a 20-percent tip, or is one 20-percent tip shared between them?

  1. Just make sure they havent taken your valuables and everything is in place before you THINK to tip. HINT: Move your own silver – they can smell it through cardbord.

  2. this is an unresolved issue i tried to get some feedback on when i moved last year. i had never hired movers before so i didn’t know what the protocol was, so i only tipped each mover $20. the owner called me up and said that 20% of the total cost is standard tip, like it was a meal or something. anyway, they wouldn’t leave until i coughed up some more dough, which left each mover with in excess of $50. so i dunno how standard that is, you’ll get wildly varying replies here. personally, i didn’t think i should have had to tip so much (what was all that money i paid if it’s not going to the moving men?), but that’s what i get for going with the lowest bidder.

  3. They will arrive before you’re ready, move stuff you wanted left and leave stuff you needed them to take, scratch or break things, block the toilet, then when you’re exhausted and everything is on their truck they stand over you and demand a huge cash tip “for the guys” (uh, if I paid for the move what is the moving company spending the money on, if not the labor?).
