Sturings at 81 7th Ave. (ex-Zuzu's Petals
I just saw the produce store fixtures being removed from 81 Seventh Ave. Guess the ownership dispute or whatever is over, and demolition is on its way? Predictions for use? My guess is retail under coops or condos (the current building is only one story)…

Sorry, the spelling police again. Did you mean “stirrings”?
Yes, I used to go from the fruit place to Ace – convenient shopping.
Ace has always been handy – and I think it is the same folks there now as when I moved into the hood in the early 80’s – or, if not, they’ve been there a long time. NYC has the population density to support such stores.
You know what? The fruit store et al has been closed for so long that I never even realized that Ace was directly adjacent to it! In any case, something tells me that Ace is not profitable enough to expand; I’m sort of amazed a market of that size and “genre” survives at all. And I hope it continues to!
The place sold after the fire. I thinkn they were trying to round up financing and approvals to build taller than the single story. I hate to see all that vacant stuff there on 7th Ave. and would welcome tenants now!
i mean to combine the current ace with the new space.
they could stand to carry a few more products…if they added a good fish section, they’d BANK.
there’s a place called barzini’s on the upper west side. something like that place would literally be a gold mine at this location.
4:10, “ownership dispute” is only a guess, but what else could cause a prime prime piece of property to languish for YEARS in such a locale?
As for Ace Expanding, Ace’s current space is larger than that first floor location.
Didn’t know about any ownership dispute – but lived near there, and really missed the vegetable/fruit place after the fire. Olive Vine and Zuzu’s opened elsehwere nearby, but I missed the food place. Figured the owner was holding out all these years (it has been at least 3, I think) to build a tall condo – seems to be the trend around here, though I hope 7th isn’t zoned for tall stuff…the ‘hood really needs the vegetable/fruit retail there – but then, I wouldn’t want one under my apartment if I lived there – would prefer non-perishable retail that doesn’t attract critters, if you know what I mean…
gosh…this is prime space. i hope it’s something good.
my hope was that ace supermarket would take over the new space, renovate and expand under whatever else they decide to build there.
or if they aren’t interested, put in a garden of eaten or amish market.
this strip of 7th between berkeley and union needs some help. there is that place across the street next to park cafe that has been a mess forever and another place for rent for almost a year down by the wine store.
can’t believe landlords aren’t anxious to get some tenants into these places…
