Has anyone replaced an old roof hatch with a new hatch/skylight combo? If so, how do you like it? How do you feel about it security-wise? Thanks for any input.

  1. Just want to throw in my two cents. Closing off a roof hatch with iron bars is very dangerous! In a multi-family building like a brownstone, the roof hatch is an emergency exit in case of fire. And barring the hatch is illegal. I don’t know what the law requires for a single family, but please check before your seal off an intended emergency exit.

  2. when we moved into our south slope house we replaced the solid roof hatch (coxloft) with a clear skylight/hatch that we can open and close using a long rod. we love it. it gives us lots more light at the top of the stairs. for security, i installed a small set of iron bars to prevent entry from the roof. the drawback is that to get on the roof i have go outside. if i were more creative, i might have put on some hinged bars w/lock, so, when i needed to get on the roof from inside the house, i could unlock the bars and get up there. oh well.

  3. Guest 11:09, thank you for posting that! I didn’t even know those existed. Fab idea for getting more light on top floor. I’m bookmarking it as we speak. How much did it cost?
