We have some ornate old cast iron radiators that we want to have someone clean up and paint with whatever paint works with steam radiators.

Has anyone used someone to do this? Did they do a good job?

Can you share any info on how the radiator is prepared: what is used for stripping paint, then what is used for cleaning surface before the application of primer?
What paint stands up to high heat and then cooling? How many top coats of paint – after primer?

Anything we should NOT do? For instance, not all paint will withstand heat so will blister or peel right away, so they need to use the right one.

Thanks

  1. As I recall the sandblasting was about $200 per radiator. They may charge by the size of the item though. I had to provide measurements before they gave me a price quote. This was less than a year ago. I can’t remember how much they quoted for the powdercoat – maybe like another $200 per radiator? Could’ve been a little more though. The sandblasting is well worth it. Good luck!

  2. Sandblasting and powdercoating is a good way to go. The powdercoat is kind of expensive though. I decided to have my radiators sandblasted and then sprayed them myself. They look great. I used a company called evernu metal that was recommended on Brownstoner.

They even pick up the radiators and bring em back – but my contractor had to load them onto and take them off the truck.

  3. You can buy high heat metal paint at a place like Lowe’s. Painting them white is nice. very easy to do yourself, just buy the paint in a spray paint can.
