Has anyone used Abdul Malek to do stucco work? My coop is thinking of using him to stucco an exterior wall of our building. Thanks for any info.

  1. Isn’t it unbelievable how few crews seem to be able to sculpt a fucking straight line–or be able to make things even remotely symmetrical! That said, every time I’m impressed with a new facade in Park Slope I look and it seems to be A. Malek. Can’t really tell you anything about them but if I ever buy a brownstone they’re gonna be the ones I call.

  2. I suppose if you have a large job he will come right away. If you have a job he considers to be small, good luck. I called him in September, he came a few days later and agreed to do a brownstone repair for me the following week. It’s now November. No sign of Mr. Malek. Small job to him, but major headache to me because of water infiltration. Needless to say, I’m in touch with someone else to do the work for me.

  3. A number of years ago we hired Malek to repoint the brick on the back of our brownstone. My husband was at work when the crew arrived. My office is at home, so I was “supervising”. My husband made the contract with Malek, describing the work process which was to go on – pick out the old grout, brush off the bricks then replace the grout with some specified material. Watching the guys working, I didn’t have any idea they were going way too fast. When my husband came back after work he discovered the crew had just zoomed down the building and had never bothered picking out the old crumbling grout, nor had they done any cleaning or brushing.

My husband called Malek in and to his credit, Malek did a lot of incomprehensible screaming and pointing at his workers. The next day, Malek’s workers picked out all of the new grout, all of the remaining old grout and started over doing it right. The job, properly done, took a few days, not a few hours.

Lesson learned? Know how the work is supposed to be done, and make sure Malek’s unsupervised crews are actually DOING that. (Husband is an architect, so he did have a leg to stand on!)

They did do a great job, but we held their feet to the fire.

  4. Second the highly recommend – my coop hired him to do a variety of jobs, always happy with the work, timing, clean up, follow up, as well.

  5. Highly recommend. Used him for brick facade / brownstone stoop and metal bay painting. Not the cheapest, but did a great job, on time, with excellent cleanup and followup.
