Verizon, Con Ed, Keyspan, Time Warner and the DOT all spray paint bluestone and other paving all over Brooklyn. At a meeting at Borough Hall a few years ago, arranged through Marty Markowitz’s office, the utilities and DOT agreed to use a rapidly degrading type of paint. This change did not happen and permanent spray paint is still in use, and used with abandon. Other municipalities use biodegradable marking that washes away in about 2 weeks.
Bluestone, which is protected by Landmarks, is very porous, and paint remover, and many other substances do not work. Concrete is also problematic. It can take years for paint to wear away, even then leaving traces. Other cities use markers that have a shorter life to mark the utility lines. Verizon’s red paint is the worst. A day-glo yellow used by Keyspan a close runner up.
it washes away eventually, people. you can get paint remover to help it along its way…
Very annoying… worked on a lovely tree pit project with my fellow co-opers on seven trees in front of our buildings… along came the utility company a few weeks later…. sprayed the bricks with yellow paint that took forever and a day to finally wear off. arrghhhhhh….
1.40, you seem to have too much time on your hands since you feel the need to comment on things you do not care about, little one. Calm down.
who the fuck cares. you guys have too much time on your hands. fucking yuppies
It does drive me crazy when they do that….
Maybe they should switch to chalk like that six-year-old so that they can be fined?
