If you’re thinking of a nice runner, it’s much more expensive. Based on what I saw at the Einstein Moomjy warehouse sale, it’s about $20 to $100+ a foot, plus $8 a foot to install, plus they’ll throw in an extra charge (seems to vary) for stair work. And it gets MUCH more expensive if you need it to turn or get wider/skinnier at any point. They charge extra per miter cut and per seam. We picked out a $28/foot material for a small but complicated job, going up a flight of steps, turning and going wider, turning again up wider steps, down a hall, then turning again and getting skinnier for the end of the hall. A lot of extra material had to be ordered for where it goes wider, and to keep the pattern matched throughout. When all said and done it’ll be like $5k. Obviously I’m paying a premium considering the source, but having seem examples of Einstein Moomjy’s runner installs, I think it’ll be worth it (we’re still waiting for the carpet to be delivered from overseas.)
If you want stair rods, definitely order them yourself from somewhere like houseofantiquehardware.com and install them yourself, which is easy. You’ll easily pay double otherwise.
10:13 here… I should mention that this was a few months ago when HD was offering a significant discount on carpet installation (I think is was 50% off on the installation fee).
$450 (carpet, pad, and installation) for 1 flight of stairs, commercial type carpet from home depot. Stair has two curves (which affects installation fee). Nothing fancy, but just fine for the stairs to our rental unit. They did a good job.
Last year we used Empire on Atlantic Ave. It was just less than a grand for the carpet and installation. A lot depends on the per SQ FT cost of the carpet – I feel our was mid-range.
our carpet is 30/sq yd and install 3000 for a 5 sty brownstone halls and stairs. anyone have prices to compare this bid to?
I used empire today so that I could get it done quickly. Two flights was $900 and they did a great job.

I paid $400 for installing only, 2 flights of stairs, the guy didn’t do the best job, but it looks ok.
