I’m facing redoing a kitchen, bathroom and sunroom (i.e., new windows), plus some simple molding in bedroom to reduce the box feel. Wondering if I should take advantage of Lowe’s credit promo now which allows zero monthly payments and interest for 12 months in
• Flooring
• Major Appliances
• Window Treatments
• Kitchen Cabinets & Countertops

I guess I mean: does anyone have experience using mostly Lowe’s (or Home Depot, which also has good credit offers) to do up their home? I’m on a budget so am not looking at fancy stuff, but would like it decent quality — esp thermally sound windows, for instance.

  1. I have always used Home Depot who pretty much matches Lowes in regards to no payments for 12 months, etc. I find that Home Depot is more willing to negotiate on prices much better than Lowes.I will say that I have gotten my lighting from Lowes as their prices are much better but overall everything else was from Home depot and I was totally satisfied.

  2. I just did my kichen too. I bought all the appliances from Loews. Got 10% off for opening a Loew’s account which is interest-free for a year. All that was good, and the salesman was helpful. They had a very pedestrian tile selection so I ended up buying my backsplash at the Manhattan Home Depot. They had unusual European tiles that I like. I got the cabinets from a cabinet place in the burbs. The pre-finished oak floor, which turned out beautifully, also came from Loews as did the sink and the faucet. I got my granite from a place on LI.
There are so many things to get for a new kitchen, the list seems endless.

  3. If using Home Depot or Lowes search the internet for discount coupons. Each store offers “moving” coupons and from time to time other coupons. You can also purchase the discount coupons on Ebay. I don’t know how the sellers do it, but for under $2 per coupon I’ve been able to get a 10% discount at Lowes every time. Beware of the 20% coupons as they are not legitimate.

  4. We used Lowes this summer for 2 gut reno bathroom projects. HD never had what we needed and any trip there was a firm reminder that Lowes is the way to go. Do your research online (not on the Lowes site – anywhere else) and then go to the store to special order the things you want from their catalogs. You can get virtually anything through them (we got kohler-made dual-flush toilets that Lowes didn’t even know existed) if you know what you want and who makes it. We took advantage of the credit card to get hundreds of dollars off in our initial purchase of special order cabinets, tubs, counters, sinks, etc. They even took back a special order piece without a box that turned out to be the wrong size. Reminds me I have a few hundred bucks’ credit to go spend there….

  5. I just finished a kitchen reno using Lowes cabinets, and a contractor recommended by Lowes (even though they were in New Jersey). We also got our new appliances there, although went with Marble.com for the granite (better variety, cheaper and 4 day turn-around). Everything went very smoothly–delivery, installation, and although we had a couple of minor issues, the follow-up visits from the contractor were prompt and did the job. We did have to stay on everyone, and keep on top of what was coming when, but it was no more than we expected. Overall, I found their price much better than Home Depot for both the cabinets and the installation, although the contractor did work for both. He did mention, though, that the quality of the cabinet boxes (not the fronts), was better with Home Depot than Lowes, but we were on a budget, so I guess you get what you pay for! If you need the name of the contractor we used, I’d be happy to hunt around for it.

  6. I’ve purchased appliances from Lowe’s and have had good experiences, but if you’re on a budget you might want to consider PC Richard (they offer credit) and if you buy multiple pieces you can usually negotiate…also I showed them a web ad for A.J. Madison and got them to beat the price.

    Good luck!
