We live 3 doors from a VERY active church. On Sundays, the congregation arrives in the morning and is double-parked all day — no tickets ever issued. Children play in the backyard (adjacent to ours) and shout/scream all day. The street is littered with garbage. There is a general lack of respect for neighbors given the noise and disruption to the block.
While I understand that the church was there long before we moved into our home, it is upsetting that the congregation is not more respectful of the neighbors.

Has anyone had these sorts of issues? And if so, how have you dealt with it?

  1. so, you’re complaining b/c for roughly 8 hours a day, children are playing and there’s some double parking?

I think there’s a farm upstate for you.

  2. talk to the pastor and to God – they could be saving you from something terrible – or not! A peaceful resolution via communication is a recommended approach.

  3. Trust me. Most churches donot deliberately set out to cause disturbances in the neighborhood. Churches with large congregations are given slack with parking on Sundays as long as they dont block hydrants.Brooklyn Tabernacle is a prime example. If you write a letter or even speak to the Pastor, he will more than likely speak to the congregation. Most churches have memebers put a sign in vehicle that they are attending service. Inconvenient as it may be, if you are double parked in and give an usher the license plate , they will make an announcement during service and have the member move the vehicle. If you dont voice your concerns, they are not mindreaders in regard to the noise but be considerate in knowing children will be children. You should not have much longer to worry about that as the fall and winter is fast approaching. Are you implying that the congregation is causing the garbage on Sundays or you are just complaining about garbage in general?Try approaching the Pastor or an usher in the church or write a letter if you dont feel comfortable.

  4. We live on a block with a Temple and Temple run pre-school and have similar problems. They have not been good neighbors. We have tried going in to talk to the Rabbi and the council. It didn’t work for us – but I would give it a shot. Make an appointment and speak with the pastor, and/ or church council.

  5. Unfortunately, this is your neighborhood. Do you expect kids not to scream while playing outside? Garbage and double parking is annoying, but I doubt it will change very much.

We had a similar problem when we discovered that the firehouse 3 blocks away would use our street whenever they needed to go westbound, lights flashing and siren blaring. We moved.
