Just bought my first 1-bedroom in a Boerum Hill brownstone. I need to renovate the kitchen, build some closets, expose some brick and possibly move a door. Do I need an architect? Construction manager? Interior designer? All of the above? Obviously, I’m a novice, so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  1. Hi, My name is Jane and my business is named ShoeBox Interiors. I live in Boerum Hill also. I’m an interior decorator and usually come in after the architect has drawn up the plans and help pick the surface finishes (tiles, counter tops, floors), style of cabinets, knobs, light fixtures, paint colors, tubs, showerheads, etc and then continue on with the furniture, window coverings, etc. Please call me if I can be of any assistance. It’s easiest to reach me on my cell phone at 347-495-7580.

  2. I think the process would be made much easier if you hired someone to manage the project for you/help you design it. I reccommend Anais Rogers for the job – 646-460-0100. She managed our renovation while we were away and moved it along three times as fast as I would have expected. Plus helped me think through all the details I needed to address.

  3. Please don’t expose the brick. That is so ugly and such a 70’s cliche. You will need to buy some avocado green appliances to go with that exposed brick. Not being mean, just trying to help.

  4. Relax buddy, she’s looking for advice not a hater. 408 Group does have partner architects and contractors that work with them, so get your facts straight. Don’t Hate The Playa Hate The Game!

  5. Yes, you need an architect.

And Debra at 408 Design Group is NOT an architect. She has no architecture license. I’m sure she’s a nice person, but she’s not an architect.

However, having said that, if you provide your renovation Scope of Work to your board and they don’t require you to get a permit, you can just hire a contractor. Alot of boards are not smart enough to know that you need to file for construction work (either that, or they just don’t care if you cause problems to other tenants).
