Anyone know where to find original floorplans for a particular brownstone? I heard that DOB has some, but not all. I’m interested in knowing what the original configuration of a brownstone was. Or is there an another resource that speculates on floorplans? I’ve gone through the Charles Lockwood book, but not that helpful with original layouts of Italianate brownstones.

  1. Did you go to the DOB and request plans? You need the block and lot #. Many browstone rows were built in groups, so if they don’t have the plans under your address, they may be under the lead house of the group. Look up all of the B&L #’s just to have them on hand.

Brownstone layouts are pretty basic. There’s not much room for a lot of variety, so don’t know what you are expecting to find. I personally found that many of the details on my blueprints were never actualized, and some things in the house are not in the plans, so it may be that changes were made for the original customers that weren’t thought important enough to change the plans.
