I’ve recently purchased a brownstone in the South Slope, near the Park. I’m wondering whether I need to put iron bars on the ground floor back bay window, and security bars which open/close on the back 2nd floor, which is accessible via a fire-escape, and on which there is a roof where a burgler could get leverage. We have a security system, so any intruder would be detected once a window broke, but I guess you don’t want people in to begin with…any thoughts on safety issues in this neighborhood, and/or how bars effect the look and value of a property? My neighbors seem evenly split with and without them…

  1. I would suggest getting the iron gates on the ground floor, and fire dept. approved gates for the fire escape.

I live close to the park as well, in WT, and though the area is much safer these days, it has
brought me peace of mind having the extra security measure of iron gates in place.

The gates actually look quite lovely, as well as
    securing my home.
