Mr. Slim installer
I’m about to have Mr. Slim air conditioning installed in my house. If anyone has had experiences — good or bad — with local installers, it would be very helpful to hear about them. Thanks very much.

Looking for some tips on installing mr slim ac units and heat pump units.
There seem to be many different degrees of “installation.” Some places will not do the necessary electrical work. Some will not do any cutting. Some will not patch and finish after cutting. All that might contribute to significant variations on the installation price.
I think someone is pulling your leg. That price sounds way, way out of line. I had estimates last year (but ran out of money) for about 7K for 3 units on one floor. I would get more estimates.
Sooooo who is good and reasonably priced to install? Please privide Phone numbers or website. Also is it more economical to buy the units directly or through the installer?
Lastly–any idea how many units are necessary for a duplex (ground floor and parlor). thanks!
I think that’s rather high. I did my split-system as part of my full gut reno – at a cost of $9500 for 3 outside units, 5 air-handlers – this was installed in 3 bedrooms, 1 fam room, 1 kitchen/dining area. Plumbing/ electric work was done by my plumber/electrician, respectively, so can’t tell you how much that would have added to the cost of the systems – if I had to guess, no more that $5k
Installer to avoid: Colon Brothers (sorry, can’t find a web presence for them at all). Friends in Park Slope had them install a combination of mini-ducts and hard ducts in their four-story brownstone for forced air heat and central a/c. Colon Brothers designed the system and were partway through the install before they realized they hadn’t allowed for any return ducts. Anywhere. At all.
Avoid avoid avoid.
PS Anyone considered buying the unit themselves and finding a moonlighting a/c person to install? I assume if you call a firm they would not install your unit.
From the installation manual, it almost seems I could do it myself with some special tools (not that I would, no snotty comments please.)
I’m shocked. Considering that you can buy a 36kbtu 2-zone Slim on the web for about 4k delivered, so times 4=16k, that’s 40k+ for installation??!! And no ducting problems! Please say it ain’t so. I was thinking of installing a 2-zone unit on my top floor but at these prices…
Wow, those prices sound HIGH. Have you guys checked out the Space Pak systems? I have heard they are good also, although I have never seen either Mr. Slim or Space Pak in person. From what I have heard Space Pak might be half the price. Also, you have to consider how the Mr. Slims will drain, you don’t want the drainage and piping coming out the front of the house, that wouldn’t look good. Would love to hear more from people who have either systems for comments on how they work, also, Mr. Brownstoner was going to post some pics of his Mr. Slims…
