I’ve always thought that metal framing looked substandard and cheap, although I know it is used everywhere in new construction. (Which, given the crapacity of much new construction, is not a recommendation in of itself.) I had some bathroom reno done, and metal framing was used, and since I wasn’t in a financial position to object much, I still wonder if I will regret it.

I saw in the Crown Hts reno both were used – what’s the rule of thumb here? What’s an average price difference? Does it matter at all?

  1. Metal is okay–but has much less structural strength than wood. When we do use metal, we get the heavy gauge stuff. It’s a pain to work with (grinder or chop saw w/ abrasive blade to cut) but it results in a much stiffer assembly than the light ones.

  2. There isn’t much of a price difference, but the aluminum is a little cheaper. You do want to use metal framing anywhere there might be contact with moisture or contact with a surface that is in the earth, like in a basement. Moisture is bad for wood in general and termites love moisture and wood.

I like wood framing for anything else, it’s just easier to work with and makes for more solid walls and when you mount things to the wall it is easier to get a good solid mount in a wood stud.
