I recently bought an apartment in Manhattan. The apartment will need to do some renovation. This is my first time buying an apartment and none of my friends have done this before. Please help to recommend a good constractor to me. Thanks.

  1. My recommendation was honest. My contractor actually doesn’t even own a computer. He’s an old-fashioned kind of guy. To the OP, I would be happy to email you pics of my home. BTW, I forgot to mention that he’s licensed & insured.

  2. Actually OP, look at the website Apartment Therapy at the contractors recommended there, because they cover more of the Manhattan contractors and you can see user comments. I think you’re getting a lot of contractors posting recommendations for themselves, on this thread. Nothing wrong with that, go ahead and meet with them. But be sure to get real, honest to goodness consumer reviews too.

  3. I’ve used a contractor named Slawek Poweirza for 15 years, in three different buildings. He is currently renovating my home in Carroll Gardens. He is honest and his crew works hard. I’ve recommended him to numerous friends, to their satisfaction. His phone number is 917-319-1347.

  4. The contractor who has lovingly renovated and restored my home is Thahal Beer of Beer Home Improvement. He doesn’t have any fancy websites or advertisements. His jobs come through word of mouth and his work speaks for itself. He is very detailed oriented, dependable, responsible and most importantly honest. He put in a brand new hardwood floor (red oak with mahogany borders) and it looks fabulous as well as three kitchens, four bathrooms. I’m in awe of my new staircase, which had to be relocated, but Beer saved all of my old spindles and banister and has made this brand-new staircase look like it is original to the house (1899). He does most of the work himself and he doesn’t sub-contract very much. He’s very hands-on and he’s at the job every day. He comes early and leaves late. I would totally recommend him with my eyes closed. If you would like to contact him, his # is (646) 358-6118. He will be more than happy to show you his work.

  5. I can happily recommend a contractor who is working on my brownstone 121 East 36TH Street in Manhattan. We have an architect also ( it was a large renovation) but you may not need an architect. It depends on what type of work and how much of it you are doing.
The name of the company is
FITZGERALD RENOVATIONS INC. The contractor’s name is John Fitzgerald and his cell number is
    917 886 9576.
    Tony.

  6. I can recommend a great Architect (which u will need to do the renovation) who works with an excellent Contractor. His name is Alex and he has been doing this work in New York for over 2o years. He works with his clients and will answer all your questions. His rates are really good and he works with you from the beginning to the end of the job – he doesn’t disappear half way through (as some Architects or even Contractors do)

Here is his phone number: 212-388-2634 or cell at 917-494-0082 and website: http://www.alexfradkoff.com. Tell him Betsy referred you and you will get a free consultation to go over your project.

Good Luck & if you have any other questions about him or want other references, just send me an email at bwalker247@yahoo.com
