We are re-doing our kitchen. Using a black floor tile and we love the look of a white grout to create a strong contrast. Our contractor says he feels we should go with black grout as the white will get really dirty over time. He said we can seal it, but it wouldn’t hold up well. Is there a way to seal it to keep it white? I’m curious what others think and what experiences you have had?
Thank you for your ideas and suggestions.

  1. We went for gray and even that is proving difficult to keep looking as good in high traffic areas as it does in the less-used corners of the kitchen. And I completely agree with traditionalmode – having had many posts “disappeared” for no apparent reason. As a result, this is the first time I’ve bothered looking on this site for weeks. What gives?

  2. Hmm, I submitted a post hours ago and it’s not here. What’s wrong with that post I submitted suggesting terrazzo tiles for the OP? I thought it was pretty good advice for someone who wants black tiles. I’ve had solid black tiles before, and they show EVERYthing. Anyway, if this site is going to first judge which comments are worth posting on Forum before putting them up, the criteria should be outlined clearly, and the process made more transparent. Otherwise it just seems very arbitrary and subjective.

  3. If you love the white grout color, and understand the extra chores, consider speccing epoxy grout. It costs about five times as much, and has stringent installation requiremens, but afterwards it is virtually impermeable. From experience you will have 5 minutes to wipe up spilled red wine, longer and there will be a faint discoloration.

    Better than conventional grout.
