can anybody shed some light on what it costs per square foot for laying tiles? Does it depend on the tile size? thanks!

Bear in mind that it also depends on the tile. Cheap machine-made 4×4 or larger tile goes down pretty fast and doesn’t require a great amount of skill.
But alot of premium tile is handmade, and/or of an unusual material, with irregular thicknesses and sizes. This takes much more patience, time and skill to lay properly.
If you’re buying some really beautiful tile, be sure to hire someone experienced in working with it.
Have you tried the RS Means construction estimate guide. It’s great. The book has price ranges for all types of construction projects and provides a scale to make regional adjustments. I have pulled it out with contractors and they all know the book. It was actually tile that lead me to me ppurchase of the book when the guy was trying to charge a lump sum that worked out to 100 a square foot.
