Cost of cedar siding?
How much should I budget for to replace, or cover, ugly tarmac siding with good quality stained wood shingles, on an average sized 3 story victorian? 25k? 35k? 50k? Anyone done this and knows the story here?

Ok fair enough, but since I put 50k in my post and someone wrote “keep going” (with the estimate) I wondered what a realistic target is..
I feel like I’m already in the midst of it and the guy keeps coming back to me for another 5k
Feel free to knock on their door, they’re lovely people and quite willing to speak about their experiences.
That said, by the time that you add the cost of any necessary demo of existing, any necessary remedial work to the sheathing and then apply a quality finish to your natural material once it’s installed, $50k is not unreasonable. Doing one of our Victorians in crappy vinyl will cost $25-$30k. Why would Shake, which must be done by a skilled tradesman, not an idiot, cost less?
Yes I was thinking of that house. It looks really nice. Maybe I should bother them.
Keep going with the price? really? we get ripped because its new york frigging city? it isn’t like these houses are unique around the country. There are heaps of siding products advertised on pages for all states. Pre-stained, synthetic, you name it.. So anyone with a house anywhere in USA is paying over 50k to do the job?
Keep going with the price. If you are close by Ditmas Park West, there was a house on the West side of Argyle between Dorchester and Ditmas that did a complete cedar shingle job less than a year ago. I heard they had a few contractors to finish and don’t know who did it in the end, but it is really nice looking. Maybe you could slip a note under the door and ask 😉
I have a three story colonial, and the hard part is finding Shingles. I remember we had to go to south Jersey to find them. A word of advise, when you do get them, make sure you get more for reserve. This way when you need to do repairs in the future, you have the same shingles. I can tell you the price, we got ours over 8 years ago.
