I am nearing completion of a 8 month brownstone renovation and I think it’s important to recommend our contractors that were excellent to work with and whom I would engage again for my next project, and would want to highly recommend to others. I got multiple quotes on each trade and these were all reasonably priced also.

Phils Air Conditioning – Nothing was too much trouble for Phil, installed a full central AC system, and end product ran all summer and is wonderful.(718) 477-0081
Chris John Electric – Very professional and reliable – their add is listed on this site.

Omar – Artistic woodcrafts, did our door restoration, bay window mouldings, he’s an excellent craftsman, we love our new doors. 646 541 3409

Joe – Jams Security – Joe installed electronic magnetic strikes on the front entry doors and then wired them to an intercom with LCD screens on each floor, so you can see who’s at the door and with the press of a button let them in from any floor. Really cool. Joe – 347 661 0019

Summit Floors – Brewse is a great guy and their work is remarkable. After an earlier experience with a group of cowboys it’s nice to have found someone who cares about the customer. 646 284 0304

4 Korners – custom kitchen, Scott Rafelle, our kitchen is 90% complete but it’s looking amazing, great local cabinet and furniture maker in Red Hook. 718 909 6157

Also as I was the contractor for the project I had a labourer work for me for the duration of the project, Charles Wold. He is capable of just about anything, he painted, hung plaster, light electrical and plumbing, installed trims, the whole lot. He is looking for his next project and would be well suited to someone who needs an allrounder to get them through their project. 917.837.9165

Hope others find these recommendations helpful…..Finding good contractors is half the battle….and we had some great ones.
Happy renovating…

  1. We posted recommending Charles Wold, we need to RETRACT that….please do not use him as he stole from us and is under investigation…all other contractors have been great…but again, please do not call Charles (Chuck) to do any jobs….

  2. That A&K studio on 9th Street is a good source for tile. I’ve looked in there before when looking for a backsplash, before we decided not to have one. We have the countertop going up a few inches instead – I like the idea of being able to paint and hang things on the wall where tile would normally go.

  3. The intercom system was an aiphone system with a master unit on the parlor floor and a slave unit on the levels above. I installed it myself and the unit cost approx $1800. All of the electronic door mechanism was installed by Joe at Jams security as above, and he wired the door release into the relay that I bought along with the intercom. It sort of seemed almost too easy. The entry is with a key fob, it has a key overide in case of a problem, the unit has a battery back up, and you can program each of the keys to have access only when you want it to, i.e. you could have one key that you give to a contractor that only lets them in between the hours of 10 and 4pm for example. Anyway so far so good, we will see if it stands the test of time, but they are commonly used in commercial applications so it should be hardy. The materials for the actual door security were around $2,500. No I don’t have any tenants. I was going to try to post some pictures but can’t work out how to do it.

  4. The basement is an english basement, i.e. with a small window to outside. We did some plumbing upgrades as you really need to get the draininage issues sorted before putting donw a floor covering. We then selected a tile from the 9th street tile store A&K studio that looks like a wood floor. And we had the tiler level the floor and lay the tiles. My labourer and I did the carpentry and we had an electrical contractor as per the above recomendations, but I was an owner builder so no GC.

  5. would love to get a sense of how much that security system cost you–sounds great and exactly what I have ben looking for–can you give more information? Do you have rentals in your brownstone? How much did such a system set you back? thanks!

  6. could you indicate who did most of the basement (do you mean cellar?) work? We’d like to finish ours after installing a french drain and 2 sump pumps, but need some reputable contractors to do it. Thanks.

  7. Which work in particular would you like to see? We renovated the parlor, new bay window, new floors, rebuilt the basement, installed central a/c, new kitchen…the list goes on. I would be happy to show you through if you are really interested.
