Can some give a clue as to how the exterior lampost gets turned on ? (and off?)
We just moved to a brownstone with an exterior lampost. We couldnt find a light switch to turn it on from the inside or outside of the house. The house has not been occupied for some time so yesterday around 4pm we put in a new light bulb – and nothing happened – no light….
We just moved to a brownstone with an exterior lampost. We couldnt find a light switch to turn it on from the inside or outside of the house. The house has not been occupied for some time so yesterday around 4pm we put in a new light bulb – and nothing happened – no light. I checked around 11pm that evening (to see if there was some sort of trigger mechanism to lack of sunlight – if there is such a thing) and it was still dark….This morning when we got up low and behold at 9am the lampost light was on. It was on all day long today. We went out in the afternoon and when we returned home this evening it was off again. Does anyone have any insight to what is going on ?
OP: Well Rupes, I bought the brownstone – I did not inherit it.
Thanks all for your posts. A friend, who is also a GC came over last night and among many recommendations and pointers, found the timer in the basement. I will have to get a flashlight to read the instructions on the box (it is a bit dark down there)later today and hopefully we will get it to work correctly. And good thing too as the public street lights arent working at my end of the block !
MV – Are you normal?
Sorry, no solution to offer beyond the descriptions above, but the OP made me laugh. Itis a quitessential old brownstone owner experience, too funny…
Lovely Amy no offense of any kind, all around me apologies.
Hey Rupes, no offense or nothing negative insinuated, but why are you being such a jerk?
No offense or nothing negative instantuated, but how in the heck did you end up owning a brownstone anyway.
Yes, there must be a timmer set up for the lamp. If you look in your basement at the front of the house you will see a single electric line coming from the yard. Trace that line and you will find the timmer before the line gets to the breaker box.
I think youll find the light switch you got has a timer effect, try disobliging it by flipping it on or off several times to override it. Otherwise there could be a faulty lite senser on the top of the light, but it could just be my own opinion. Good luck with it all, and ask a neighbor who works their own light good if all else fails.
OP: Im sorry I dont understand your posting. We own the brownstone. No one else lives here.
