I am looking to replace the side stair in a 13.5′ wide brownstone with a center stair. I have depth – 55′ long – that I would love to use. Has anyone done this?

I am looking for pictures as I am trying to work out what the footprint of the stairs will be. I have 4 levels with the ff ceiling heights going up from garden, parlor, etc: 8, 10′, 9′,9′. I am hoping I can reduce the existing 19′ x 6′ footprint (includes walkway and landings) to say 9’x10′ – with a C shaped staircase and landing

This is part of a gut renovation.

Also for anyone who’s done this, how much did the stairs cost?

Thanks very much for your help

  1. OP here: I AM getting an architect, I wanted to have something to work from. I did find what might be a better alternative: a (squared-off) C staircase that has still has the longer length against the side wall but since its a C this length reduces.

  2. Dude, you need an architect. A stair has to be 36″ wide. You can do a straight run up to 12 ft in height, so count your risers and multiple by 11-12″ and that will give you the total length you need.
