I want to build a fence around a corner building I own. Does anyone know how I can find out about nyc regulations on building a fence? Do I need a permit? I would like to find out the maximum height for a fence. I also need to find out what is nyc regulation on the location of the fence…where legally can the fence be located on the sidewalk.
Thank you in advance for any help.

  1. My advice get a professional to do it..if you want it to last that is..anyone can throw up a fence, but when its done properly deep holes are dug, cement is mixed and poured and the whole thing comes together nicely(sturdily that is)

In any case you do not need a permit if it is a basic fence around your property..however you must not overstep your property/neighbor boundaries, neighborhood height boundaries and any other local ordinances that may apply(particulalry if your in a historic/[preservationist type neighborhood).

If you price out local fencing companies they will usually give an estimate for free and give you the skimmy on what you can and cant do(all for free).

Not sure exaclty what kind of fence you’re putting up(I assume DIY chain link or perhaps wooden slats), in any case I had a beautiful ornate Iron deal done and it came out fantastic..did I mention sturdy.

There are a few recommendations on this site here; the one I ended up using is Metal Box Iron 7188593974 and I priced another from Vanguard #?(however too far and too pricey).

    All the best
