We recently purchased a townhouse built in the 1880-1860s, and the inspector said the roof was in decent condition — with new tar paper added in the last few years. We want to add some pots — about six large ones that weigh around 40 lbs each. Some people have told me that should be no trouble since these flat roofs can withstand snow which weighs so much more, as well as rain. But other people have told me that these old roof can’t take much weight. I’d love to hear any thoughts/experiences. Thanks in advance.
Damage to roofing materials aside, a flat roof can _easily_ support the pots.
The possible trouble is that many of these roofs get very soft in the hot summer. Those pots could stick to your roof. If you plan to spend lots of time on your roof I would consider building a deck to protect your roof from leaks.
