I need to somebody to work along with me hauling stuff from the basement, scarping paint. Nothing glamorous or highly skilled. SOmetimes I see those guys hanging out at Home Depot or I understand there are certain corners. I’m willing to pay $15-20 an hour and I speak decent Spanish, so it seems like a good deal. ANybody have any expereince?

  1. Oh my!, you hit the nail on the head with #2. There are too many unscrupulous GCs, which makes folks like me want to go DIY along with help from day laborers. As for illegals, that’s a political discussion that has about as much place on this board as a religious one.

  2. I always hire day labors from church and Mcdonald, $90 to $120 plus lunch for the day (8 to 4 or 9 to 5)
depending on the skill level required. I hired one guy for 3 months straight when I was doing a DIY 3 floors of renovation.
    saved a ton of money.

    good luck.

  3. No one has brought up 3 of the main reasons not to hire day labors.

    1. is a safety issue(theft of supplies before and when they come back later on, often not qualified in any regard hence mishaps and your liability to this person when they get hurt)
    2. this only further goes to push up prices and lower the quality of labor everywhere while actual handymen and the like go out of business.(I’m neither and yes many GC’s are unscrupulous but they hire these day workers to and often charge you for professional rates..shame shame shame)
    3. Not all Day Laborers are Hispanic and not all are illegal. But in the case of hiring any illegal workers(Hispanic, Cuban, Hatian, etc) you are only promoting a vastly greater problem.

ALL that said, this argument about Christians is STUPID..WHatever relgion the person is does not guarantee they are any better than someone who is not(and how do you know what they are exactly?) Do you prescreen; ie look for a cross, a bible ask if they’ve been baptised?) Really Really silly argument and off topic as usual..

Hey “Johny the Wop”..How youuu doiiinnnn…

  4. Is there a reason people are always discussing things other than real estate, housing and neighborhoods here? Get over it and find a new place to vent you anger and opinions.

  5. I have picked up day laborers from Ft. Hamilton Pkway and 36th Street (right at the edge of the cemetery). I have pretty much used them to help me with painting and yardwork and clearing out debris from a renovation job we were doing. I have never had a problem communicating with them. What I usually do is negotiate a rate for the day and I usually include lunch with that. The average I have spent was about $75 for the painting jobs (4-5 hours) and $100 for the labor intense jobs (3-4 hours).

  6. I don’t know, all the christians I’ve ever met (you know, the people who announce their religious leanings) are foul-minded bigots.

I guess maybe there are nice Christians out there, but they don’t mention their religion.

But like I said, I never met one who said it out loud and was an honest person. A

And that goes for all religions. Anyone announcing that kinda stuff is creepy with a capital C.

  7. The issue with day laborers (whether they be of Spanish speaking origin, Christian or not, etc) is that they are uninsured and untaxable workers. If something were to happen to them, you or your property you would have to most likely suffer most, if not all, of the costs that would come from it and you may have a harder time writing off the labor as home-improvement. Yes, most are honest people, not necessarily because they’re Christians, but because this is their livelihood and it’s no more in their best interest than it is yours for them to exhibit behavior that would harm continual day-labor employment. As is the case in general, best to go with a referral or at the very least trust your instincts. Good luck.
