I have just had my cast iron fireplace covers stripped of many layers of paint and lacquered and I am now wondering how on earth to reattach them (they were unattached when I purchased the house). Anyone have any experience with doing this? A couple of the covers have hooks attached to them but its not at all clear what they should be attaching to… Any advice on this project would be appreciated. Thanks

  1. It kind of depends what you have. Some metal summer covers fit into a summer cover surround. They fit snugly, but until you have encountered one, it is hard to imagine the many different ways you might need to tilt or angle it to get it to fit in and remain snug. If none of this makes sense, it is possible you have the cover but not the surround, in which case you will need to shop the archtitectural salvage places for a matching (more or less) surround.

  2. Hi,
Typically the iron surrounds were attached by wire to the inside of the firebox. Sometimes the attachment point was a simple masonry nail, other times there is an anchor drilled into the side wall of the firebox. Then you attach a piece of wire to the cast loop on the surround and to the anchor point, then twist the wire to tighten it.
Hope that this has been helpful
