Fan and ceiling medallions
We have the original ceiling medallions on 2 rooms, but would like to put ceiling fans. Our contractor is telling us we need to either cut the cone of the medallion or put something at the bottom of the cone from which the fan would attach. Has anyone else done this before? I hate to…

I hate to ruin the medallions, but also don’t want the fan to look weird – I have wanted this fans forever…
Great idea Bob. Now I can’t wait to get home and fill the gap we have at the top of one of our light fixtures (supposedly “temporary” but the ugly gap’s been bothering me for over a year).
Thank you so much for the help. I have reach the point in our renovation that I cannot make any more decisions!
Neat idea Bob. To OP, a canopy spacer is simply a one inch dish shaped ring with a hole in it. It gets preasure fit between the canopy and the medallion. If you need to fill a larger space you can add an additional one to make it thicker. The spacers nest like stacking paper cups. They come in white so it will look fine. Check the photo I posted.

Could either one of you post a picture of what it looks like? I am still having a really hard time figuring out what it would look like. This is the fan I am putting up and I am wondering if it is going to look weird since is not white.

That’s just what I did–the gas pipe makes for a very secure connection. The only thing I did differently from Rick was to make a spacer from a coffee can , to go between the shalow fan canopy and the medallion.
If you have the original gas pipe you should be able to hang the fan off the pipe. If it’s going to hang too low and make a space at the medallion to canopy you simply use a filler plate that you can purchase at most lamp stores. It’s a bad idea to chop any of the plaster away from your medallion, it will never be the same. If you need help or more info. You can reach me at bottlecap@mindspring.com Rick
