Hi, i live in a coop and my brother in law will redo my tile and replace my bath fixtures, i’m getting different info regarding if i may need a permit to do this.
today i dropped by NYKB (ny kitchen and bath ) they told me i would definitely need a permit to replace tile.
is there a place i can get a definitive answer?
i tried researching on the nyc.gov website but to no avail.
any help is appreciated thanks!

  1. Permit? BS. They are CRIMINALS–literally. First, they don’t place deposits in escrow AND in at LEAST three cases I know of, they collected SALES TAX on a CAPITAL IMPOVEMENT!!!! This is fraud. Don’t ruin months (or YEARS) of you life by dealing with these con artists. Google, Google, Google and the truth will become VERY clear (in spite of NYKB’s having hired a PR person). STAY AWAY.

  2. who would know if you just did it? getting a permit is nothing but a headache, just have the tile redone, no big deal. just make sure you are not, repeat not, messing with the pipes.

  3. I’m planning a similar renovation. Can anyone let me know APPROXIMATELY how muuch it would cost to replace tiles on the floor and the wall, new toilet, new sink and vanity and reglazed bathtub? I am in the process of getting quotes from contractors and want to make sure I am getting realistic bids. Thanks.

  4. call the dept of buildings and tell them what you are doing. I did the same thing and my building kept saying i need a permit and i kept saying i don’t so i called DOB and they confirmed that I DID NOT need a permit for this sort of work. cover your butt…

  5. no i wasn’t shopping there, i just dropped by because i was in the nabe, they weren’t too helpful and they also mentioned they don’t sell retail, only design and build and the minimum is 15k, they also mentioned the minimum a few times, cause i guess i looked like
sh!t after shlepping around the city all day with a 7 month old. gave me the same vibe like when i walk into Barney’s or something

    hey thanks for the replies:)

  6. Why would you shop there? Their artistic tiles are way, way overpriced. And clearly they have no clue about getting things done in NYC.

  7. You only need a permit if you are moving plumbing fixtures around, adding or deleting fixtures or gas lines or moving or deleting walls or fixtures. Not for removing and replacing something in the exact same place.
