I just paid $650 to have 8 ceiling light fixtures installed by a licensed electrician. Now I am feeling like i paid to much. This was supposed to be the family and friends price. Does anyone know if this sounds about right? I have two more fixtures to install but it seems ridiculous to pay about 80 dollars per fixture for what amounted to a 3 hour job. The wiring was already there and in excellent condition(updated 5 years ago).

  1. dont complain about the price that was really a fair price if you think its to much y didnt u do it yourself.cause you cant.we get paid for our knowledge and expertise.dont bash us electrician,we are a very highly skilled trade not theifs…..

  2. How did you ask the contractor to bid it, “Time and Materials” or as a “complete” job? In the scenario you describe, your best option would seem to have been on a T/M basis (3 hours plus ~100’BX and a handful of wire nuts). However, if you just asked for a job price, then they figure the quote based on a standard per point basis. Both ways are valid, it’s just necessary for you to understand the different ways contractors price so that next time, you can decide which method is more cost effective.

  3. That’s a deal bren!

The OP would do well to get a good home repair book–it’s really NOT rocket science–in fact, it’s even a little easier than brain surgery.

  4. You’re right, the work is pretty straightforward if you’re familiar with it and are a “hands on” kind of person, but sounds like OP doesn’t have that kind of expertise just yet…

PS: I won’t turn you in Bob, if you don’t turn in my hubby! 🙂

  5. The family and friends price?
(do not mix business and personal, then you will not have all these expectations)

a licensed electrician to put up ceiling light fixtures?

next thing thing you should do is hire a licensed plumber to install a shower head.

  6. there seems to be a prevailing attitude around here that if you didn’t pay top dollar for some thing or some service, you have definitely cut some corner either legally, aesthetically, or quality-wise.

    it’s kindof annoying.

there IS a happy medium between cutting corners/shoddy work and paying through the nose.

it’s just hanging a light fixture. it’s not rocket science.

  7. I know you need a licensed electrician to install a new circuit, but is one really legally needed to hang a light fixture? If so, please don’t turn me in 🙂

  8. ok, i guess we just have different electricians.

i am looking at invoice right now from a licensed electrician in NYC.

it was $70 to “say hello”, then $50 per 1/2 hour.

so 3 hours would be $370.

    their phone # is 1-800-347-0909.
