attaching a ledger to a brick wall?
so i’m building a steel framed deck and was wondering if anyone has experience attaching a ledger for a deck to the brick wall. it’s a 100 year old house and the brick is 11 3/4″ thick. should i bolt it with hilte epoxy and 1/2 inch all thread or bolt it all the way…
so i’m building a steel framed deck and was wondering if anyone has experience attaching a ledger for a deck to the brick wall. it’s a 100 year old house and the brick is 11 3/4″ thick. should i bolt it with hilte epoxy and 1/2 inch all thread or bolt it all the way through the bricks with a nut on the back side … OR i could go through the brick and the first joist (which is a couple of inches from the interior wall) and then put the nut against the back of that joist. alternately, i could make it free standing. any thoughts or experience with this would be greatly appreciated!!! thanks.
op here:
also, Bruce: there is 2 1/2″ between the joist and brick; could I bolt through all and just use blocking between that josit and the masonry? thanks!
op here: thanks! very helpful. btw: does anyone know the frost line in nyc … i haven’t been able to get a definite from the dob website (posted about this last week, and some people said they thought it might be 42″, but nobody was sure about it). appreciate any thoughts!
If you have access to the inside, thru bolting is the way to go. I am thinking 5/8 or 3/4 threaded rod (available in 48″ lengths)with BIG washers. You never want to revisit this, do it right the first time.
If I understand there is a joist up against the inside? if it is indeed flush with the inside you can use it to reinforce the washer, drill all the ay thru. But if there is a space between the joist and the masonry, see above.
I would not go with “free standing”. My deck was put up using a ledger and large expansion bolts to the brick wall. A pair of lolly columns were used too running from the ground to the ledger. Be sure to have your cement footings deep enough too. The footings should be well below the frost line.
Op here … “it freestanding” being the use of additional posts and scrapping the ledger altogether. thanks!
