I’ve had 4 Sharp air conditioners these past several years and they all seem to give off a smell every one in awhile. Does anyone know what causes this? Do all air conditioners do this or should I switch to another brand?
Thanks

  1. It has nothing to do with the brand, household AC’s work in a closed loop and don’t emit any fumes. You just need to clean the things. The outside portion should be cleaned at least once a year (Spring is a good time for this); larger AC’s are usually in a sleeve, so you can just slide the guts of the unit inside for cleaning without messing with the mounting. For the inside facing portion of the AC pop out the filter and clean it in the bathtub once a week, and clean the rest of it when it looks dirty. You may be able to get away with cleaning the filter every other week, but if it smells…

When you clean the outside option, you might also want to make sure the drainage holes on the outside aren’t clogged and that the AC isn’t tilted inward which allows excess water to collect in it. Use a little bleach when you do the cleaning, this will help kill the existing mold. Cleaning also helps the unit work cool effectively and use less energy.

There are also services that will take your AC in the Fall, clean them, and return them in the Spring. But you still need to clean the inside facing portion of the unit during the summer.
