I went searching for a solid side through the wall a/c this weekend due to the bars on the windows which do not allow for a window air conditioner. My concern is the noise factor. Does anyone have such an a/c set-up with most of the unit in the house and only a few inches outside pressed up against the bars? I don’t want to buy such a unit and find that the noise is unbearable due to the larger part of the unit being in the house. Thanks in advance.
When it comes to silent I don’t think anything beats the Split A/C units out there. We fell in love with these in Europe last summer (they were everywhere – don’t know why they haven’t caught on here). Mitsubishi makes them (“Mr. Slim”) and so does LG. We’re looking to install this summer.
I don’t think there’s that much of a difference noise-wise between through-the-wall AC units and window units. We have two through-the-wall units, and I wouldn’t call them silent but they are certainly not any louder than a window unit. Maybe slightly quieter even.
If you’ve got a sleeve installed, just use that. If not, have the bars modified or be prepared to cut a hole…..
fwiw, solid side a/cs are less efficient. If you do it righ, you can install regular a/cs in bigger sleeves and get best of both worlds.
New through the wall air-conditioners are extremely quiet. I have 2 Friedrich Wallmasters installed by Hamilton Air who also broke through the brick. I love not taking up a window with an ac. Of course, it does cost some money, but I think it’s worth it. Talk to a few ac companies-see what they suggest. My contractor came up with Hamilton-they did a good job.
I would suggest having the exisitng gate modified… have an a/c bay installed on the existing gate.
Call any Ironworks business and explain your need.
