I just bought a portable unit at PC Richards and they turned it on for us. They even turned multiple models on so we could hear the difference. It helped us to realize that the one that was slightly less attractive and more expensive was much, much quieter for our Living Room, so we bought it. I don’t know why you were all having problems there. Take your wife. They’ll turn the units on for her.
PC Richards is the worst store and worst service I have ever encountered. I’m with you, 11:48. My opinion is based on walking into not just one, but 3 different PC Richards stores on 3 different occasions. The salesmen (they’re ALL men, and macho big attitude ones at that, go figure what that says about the management) were uninformed, completely, and totally unhelpful. Don’t bother asking them questions or for help. If you are already informed about what you want, and can just walk in and buy it, then go there. Otherwise avoid them.
The best appliance store in Brooklyn is AJ Madison. They’re a little inconvenient b/c they only have one store located further out, and they are closed on weekends (owners are Jewish) but their customer service is tops. Whether in store or over the phone. I bought our washer/dryer from them, and all our kitchen appliances. Subsequently I was a pain in the rear for them, because first one thing was missing from an appliance (they shipped it to me ASAP) and then I kept getting confused registering my extended warranties. And I always got plenty of patient, professional assistance over the phone. You can order items off their website and if it’s in stock they will deliver it the next day. Their prices are competitive too.
Panasonic best, but they do not make a/cs anymore, or so Ive heard.
GE AM series supposedly very quiet. I went to PCRichards and asked if I could hear the ac running and manager said they don’t do that. If real stores don’t give you even that level of service, I said I’d buy online. Didn’t faze manager.
I agree. Panisonic is by far the quietest I’ve found. Much quieter than the GE models that Consumer Reports recommended last year (they didn’t evaluate Panisonic models). Still, I would love the Split A/C solution.
We just bought AC’s that were supposed to be quiet and they are so loud. None will be quiet, I agree. Have you looked into a “split system” AC? It’s not central air, it’s something else, it’s less costly than central air, and it’s more quiet than window units. We’re looking into that for next year.
I wear ear plugs, too, like the other poster. I love them. I wear the smushy silicone putty ones, because I have tiny ear canals and regular ear plugs won’t fit me. The silicone putty ones only cover the outside of the ear, not inserted into the ear. I use them for swimming too. They can be used over and over a few to several times.
Check out Consumer Reports online — they do very thorough reviews of window air conditioners, so you can also evaluate handy features like energy efficiency.

I don’t get it. AC is total white noise, I am a light sleeper and depend on something like a fan or AC to mask out everything else…
