We have new sod in our brownstone backyard. Any advice on how best to mow the grass? Do the push mowers work? I don’t want to get a big electric mower, but a friend warned me that the push mowers don’t cut very well. We spent a bit of money to put in the sod, so we want to cut it the right way. We’re worried that if we just use the weed whacker to cut the grass, we’ll ruin it. Anyone have any experience? Thanks.

  1. I have a lawn in the back of my brownstone and I mow it with a reel mower, made by Brill, that I bought at this site: http://www.cleanairgardening.com/brillux38ree.html

It takes me about seven minutes. The mower cuts very well and is light, compact, and efficient. Depending on how smooth a cut you want, you can mow it in two directions, which is often done for very fine lawns even with a gasoline mowere.

  2. OK, we bought a push mower today…it’s exactly the right size (very small, which we wanted). Unfortunately, there aren’t many push mowers for sale in Brooklyn (at least at Lowes, didn’t try HD). Once we assemble it, I’ll post back and let you know how it works.

  3. I also don’t know the brand but we had a push mower in our last place that worked beautifully. Keep researching push mowers. There’s no reason to get something more involved.

  4. I was researching electric mowers before and it seems there are only a couple that one finds on “green” sites over and over as highly recommended. I don’t think the market is crowded with electric mowers. One should be able to find consumer comments via google searches on those mowers pretty easily.

  5. I’m original poster and I have no interest in a gas powered motor. But I would consider electric. I’d rather have a very small push mower, but friend who bought one said he never used it because it didn’t work on the grass (grass had to be perfectly level to cut it well). Since we hope this sod will last, I want to get something that cuts it the right way. I was hoping to hear from someone who actually used a mower on a brownstone backyard (as opposed to the surburbs). I guess no one has grass (or at least, they are all out mowing it on a saturday morning instead of reading the forum.)

  6. Anybody even slightly concerned about the environment should not be buying a gas powered mower. Or blower. Especially for our small backyards here in Brooklyn. I’ve read many times stats that show they spew out more exhaust than automobiles.

  7. Thanks, John. Any advice as to brands of push mowers with sharp blades? I’d definitely prefer the push mower, but don’t want to buy one, lug it home, and find out it doesn’t cut well enough.
