We are currently in the process of purchasing a 3-family brownstone in Park Slope and wanted your opinions with regards to using a broker to find a home insurance. Is it worth it to use a broker and if so, what is the fee? What is the disadvantage of calling a home insurance company dirctly and soliciting quotes directly?

If we were to use a broker, are there brokers that you recommend that we use? Thanks!

  1. Hi, my name is Kevin and I work at the Curran Cooney Penny Agency on Long Island. Having had an office in Brooklyn we do have a lot of clients in Brooklyn for homeowners, business, and building insurance and we could definetly help you out. First, there is no fee for using us as a broker/agent. Most home insurance companies do not talk directly to the insured, only the direct writers do such as Allstate and Statefarm do. But there are many more options out there besides the direct writers. When you call an agent like ourselves we can go to many different companies depending on the situation to find the right fit and right price for you. You could develop a relationship with our agency as opposed to a random person that you would talk to by calling a Geico or any 800 number for your insurance. By the way, Allstate agents are giving out Fireman’s Fund quotes because their own company stopped writing property coverage in NYC and Long Island. We have different options for buildings that are completely tennant-occupied and owner-occupied. Please feel free to call us if you have any questions and we will be glad to help.

She found us a Fireman’s Fund policy on the house we bought Feb 1, 2007. She is thorough, very sweet & very responsive. No additional fee to her at all.
