Fireplace cover

So curious if anyone has tried to polish/restore/clean their fireplace covers. I believe this is brass. Should I get some brass cleaner and just start rubbing? Any advice on how to clean mine up a bit would be great. Thanks. Photo is attached. http://www.flickr.com/photos/7749621@N04/661730853/
