Arbitration needed: We have room for one or other on the top floor of our 17 wide brownstone:
1. A large full bathroom that includes a reasonable sized shower stall (4′ wide), but smaller adjacent laundry closet with separate but stackable Bosch washer and dryer.
2. A still large full bathroom but with tiny shower stall (2′ 6″). Allows laundry closet to accommodate side by side Bosch washer and dryer.
I say [1] because a kick-ass shower accrues more value to the property than a nicer laundry closet, plus I am 6′ 3″ and 200+ lbs. My wife says [2] because side-by-side does larger loads, plus I rarely do the laundry and this is a 2nd bathroom (for currently tiny son + any overnight guests) – we already have a larger bathroom with very large shower stall in the master suite.
Can anyone say what brand of stackables has the best (that would be least) repair record??

Whirlpool makes an excellent 27″ vertical w/d called the Thin Twin. It’s an incredible workhorse and can handle big loads. But it’s also very, very ugly. I love using it but can’t wait for the day we build a closet around it so are guest bathroom (where it’s located) would a look a little prettier.
Agree w/ the Duet or the Kenmore version of the Duet are stackable and full sized. You don’t need to make a choice.
I am a wife, mother and homeowner who just went through a renovation insisting on side by side washer dryer for the same reason: large loads. These new machines work best (and your clothes last longer) with smaller loads. I have found that for extra large loads I send out to the laundromat. In the end I wish I had used the space differently and done a stacked washer dryer. Go with the shower!
FYI, a 30″ shower doesn’t meet code/ADA requirements.
We have a very large stackable whirlpool front loading washer and dryer. It can wash some ungodly number of jeans at one time (16 pairs I think). Go with option number one and buy a the “Duet” line of whirlpool washer and dryers (they can go side by side or be stacked, either way they have the same extra large capacity).
That way both of you are happy!
Also, that is too narrow for a nice shower stall if you go with option 2.
2:18 must be used to suburbia. As one who does laundry quite often, I say it’s actually easier with stacked units.
A 2-1/2′ shower seems small, so go for stacked.
You may be able to do both. I just bought a 27″ front load Whirlpool washer which can handle huge loads. I happen to use it as a side by side, but according to the literature, it can be stacked. Talk to a salesperson at a reputable appliance store – maybe neither of you have to compromise.
