We recently bought a condo (new construction). My husband keeps noticing a damp smell like wet cement. It bothers him so much he wants to move! The smell doesn’t bother me. Any suggestions?

  1. Concrete continues to shrink for up to 30 years but it really shouldn’t be a problem smell wise by the time the new construction is occupied. Are you sure there isn’t a water problem somewhere, leaky pipe, leaky roof, or leaky walls?

I would be surprized if your husband still smells it 18-24 months after pouring, if the property was occupied say 9 months after the concrete was poured you should give it another year.

Check for water problems, and if you don’t find any just increase the air circulation until your husband can tolerate the smell.

  2. AHHH! That new building smell! It’s not just your apartment, but the entire structure that needs to breathe. Concrete cures forever, but the aroma should disappate shortly after full occupancy and all the floors are covered with wood, carpet, or in the case of the fire stairs, paint. As with any odor, ventilation is the key for dissaption, so open the windows (if you can) and enjoy the spring air.
