I have received 2 quotes for doing stucco or brownstone siding on a small structure. The more expensive quote (twice as much) is for three coats, the scratch coat, the brown coat and the finish coat. The finish coat involves mixing colors to find the correct color. The less expensive quote has only two coats, the scratch coat and the finish coat. The contractor who is doing only two coats says that he has done hundreds of these jobs and that 3 coats is not necessary. Does anyone now whether it is worth spending the extra money for three finishes?

  1. I always say; read the proposal to understand what you are paying for.
Brownstoning takes at list three coats, but never two finish coats.Believe me.

  2. Go with the cheaper quote.

If you read through posts on brownstoner.com, you will find that the person who went with the cheaper quote always was happy and nothing but praises to sing for the contractor.

  3. Get references from the contractors and speak to the people they worked for directly. Ask for work that was done 5 or more years ago and see for yourself if it has held up. That is the best way to make a decision. If they can’t give you referrals, don’t bother with them.
