We are fortunate to have skylights in our top floor townhouse apartment in Brooklyn, however we are concerned about security issues. All the townhouses on our block are the same height and adjoined, and therefore our roof can be accessed from multiple other buildings. The skylghts are in the form of windows that can be cranked open from the inside, and we fear that they could also be easily forced open from the outside.

What is the best solution to resolve this potential problem? Are there standard grids that can be installed?

  1. When we first lived on our block, in the eighties there were gangs who broke into house via the skylights. We had a wrought iron box built aroundit and haven not worried since. We have a stained glass insert in the ceiling so you do not see the iron box.

  2. you could put an alarm there. There are “contact” alarms, which go off it is opened (but that’s a problem if you want to keep it open). There are also motion sensors and glass-break alarms (that listen for the frequency of glass breaking — won’t help if the window is pryed open).

If your skylight is not youor point of access to the roof, you can also put bars on the outside of it, over the top and secured to the roof.
