We will be moving in to a townhouse that is in dire need of a new entry door at the Parlor level. Most of the doors in the neighborhood are mostly glass and seem like they would be very easy to break into. I have seen a few metal entry doors with lovely iron work that seem much more secure. SO the question is this: Have brownstone owners encountered security issues with their front doors? What is the best secure and esthetic solution?

  1. A couple months back I spotted a footprint on the wood section of our mostly glass front doors. It was disturbing (was someone trying to kick their way in) but then again, on the other side of the vestibule we have the inner front door that is mostly solid walnut and any intruder would have a helluva time getting through that. I suspect most break-ins are through open windows.

  2. First responder here. We use Slomins which along with ADT seem to be the 2 main alarm companies in our neighborhood. I’m guessing that service is not that different. Pricing policy was though. As I recall it Slomins installed the equipment at no cost to us, but required that we sign a five year service contract (which is transferable). ADT charged for the equipment up front, but required a shorter contract (3 years I think). Call either company and they’ll come to your house to make a sales pitch.

  3. Yes, lived in PH for many years (back to the bad old days)and have the same feeling as previous posters – if someone is going to break in they will. Have never heard of break-ins done this way – they seem to prefer the ground floor entries. Our street is moderately busy.Maybe crooks feel too exposed up on the top of the stoop.

  5. My house in Boerum Hill has a glass front door. We have an alarm system. We’ve never had a problem but sometimes think about doing something more secure. Hate metal bars though. Makes it feel like your living in a prison. Solid doors are a solution, but darken the house by blocking light. I’m sort of fatalist and assume that if someone wants to break into your house, they’ll find a way.
