I just sent 2 of my mantels out for stripping. The owner of Dip ‘n Strip said that the decorations on one fireplace were just plaster stuck on paint-grade wood. The mantels are original, but always meant to be painted over. The mantel has already lost some of these plaster decorations. How horrible would it be not to replace them, and just have a plainer looking mantel? And if I did replace them, where would I get these plaster things and how would I stick them on?
An experienced decorative artist can duplicated these using plaster. Do a search for decorative painter or faux finisher.
try Decorators Supply Corp in Chicago.

they make plaster and composite ornaments in traditional Brownstone designs.
There are a number of lumber sources that may have similar decorative flourishes in wood. I think they are called wood appliques. You’ll find them in the same places that sell table legs, bun feet, corbels, etc. Try http://www.vandykes.com or thehardwarehut.com to get you started. Google around for more sources.
