  1. I have hired lots of Guatemalans before. Make sure, well at least try to make sure, that they are at least 21 years old. Many are under age for construction type work. Make sure they are dressed for the type of work, namely work boots ect. I always gave my guys respirators to wear. You would be surprised just how many of these guys have never worn one before.I paid my guys $80 to $150 per day…plus lunch. Most want to get paid at the end of the day but try to hold out for the end of the week. Many of these guys actually get beaten up on pay days and get robbed by other members of their communities. Many get rolled after drinking and passing out at “clubs” specifically in business for men like this. They also get robbed by contractors who never pay them.
No loans. No pot or alcohol. NEVER leave them unsupervised at any time. It takes awhile but you can find a good steady crew in about two weeks.

  2. hey if the gov. had a problem with pppl hiring illegals then they would not let them in,

also how am i undercutting peoples “rights”??

i’m trying to make a buck like everyone else

  3. So you honestly don’t care about undercutting the rights of all the people in this country by creating a vast labor underclass if it means that you save a grand or two on renovating your rental?

Ever heard the old saw, “there but for the grace of god go i?”

I think you do need a lecture. You won’t be on top forever, asshole. Don’t exploit lest ye be exploited.

  4. op here,
i’m looking for cheap labor cause i don’t want to pay alot of money on a property that i will only rent out anyway

i dont need a lecture, its a free market economy and i will only pay for the cheapest materials and labor anyway

  5. Hey Anonymous at 9:36am:

It’s anonymous 7:47 here, the political asshole. And yeah, I do agree with you that I would gladly pay $100 (that’s 12.50/hour) for a day of raking or shoveling. I think that’s more than fair. I think fair actually starts at $80

I have worked enough jobsites where people are getting $60 or *gasp* $50!!!!! And I have talked to enough people who have wanted custom cabinetry for $80…

…that I had to write something.

Surely my larger point isn’t lost?

That craigslist culture can’t just take over without a serious loss in overall quality?

  6. I’m not endorsing the use of day laborers, but understanding the risks as outlined by others above…

    Church/McDonald in Kensington

  7. In NYC you definitely DO NOT get what you pay for.

Sometimes cheap guys are great. Other times expensive guys are thieves. Sometimes the other way around.

It comes down to the individual you hire, plain and simple.

  8. The best way to find them is by word of mouth. Talk to your friends, neighbors and get recommendations. They are cheapER, but not that much. Make sure they come recommended.
