Just got an estimate for custom cellar door i the backyard.
$550 includes
new door and fittings
colapsable vent for dryer
a little vent for the garden hose
internal lock.

Company was local Bed-stuy, Custom Metal Products.

Does it sound right?

  1. I had two iron cellar doors installed and they are both leaking. I seems that the hinges are exposed to the elements and the rain runs right through them. They are not like the original ones that were sort of dovetailed. Also, they are so heavy I can’t open them. I think that could be a dangerous problem if there were a fire. I complained to the company but I was met with silence. I thought maybe I could have some sort of hydraulic lifts put on them. As for the hinges… I tried foam insulation from a can, rubber glued over them, caulk but all to no avail. I am stumped. Anybody have any suggestions?

  2. I used Lee from Metro Iron several times(front Hatch with vent, backyard hatch, window guards) and he was excellent and way cheaper than anyone else I interviewed. 718-986-8288.

  3. We had some problems with Custom Metal Products, too, but it was for an iron fence around our tree pit. The decorative tops of the fence rusted and some even broke off. However, we had them do two a.c. boxes for us which were fine. But for this cellar door installation, I’d be worried that their price is low. There’s another iron works in Bed-Stuy, too. Maybe you could get recommendations from the neighborhood yahoo group (BSHINE) (a great resource).

  4. This might be totally ridiculous, but I just unearthed the old hatch from our cellar (it was upside down with plants in it – nice!). It’s obviously not in pristine condistion, but it’s still solid and the sides are blue. If it saves anyone a few bucks, they are more than welcome to it. Door open an close, it probably just needs a clean and rust cleaned off….

  5. That’s similar to what we paid with NY Iron Works. Make sure the workers slope the concrete base for the hatch away from your house. We did two hatches and one, which is not sloped properly, is leaking.

  6. I can tell you ALL about this guy. He is fine with the cellar hatches. Not top quality, but gets the job done. He is a nice guy. BUT. I had him build a deck and he was a NIGHTMARE.
Took 6 months to start. Then left a huge mess in the backyard, his workers smoked pot and drank at lunch and peed in my backyard. They stopped work for a few more months. I had to fire him. Result…I had 3 seperate contractors work on the deck.

  7. It sounds good original poster. Can you do a big favor? If you go with this guy, can you post details on how the job went and his contact info?
Thanks very much and good luck.
