I live in a duplex apartment where the master bedroom lofts over the living room. As a result, A/C options are difficult because there is no window in the bedroom. I’m not sure how easy it will be to get approval from the building to install an A/C unit into the wall, and after last summer, we definitely need A/C. Does anyone have recommendations for good A/C consultants to give us some relatively affordable options for our apartment?

I haven’t used them myself, but have seen their work and it looks good.
Have you thought about a split system? They’re more expensive to install than regular A/C, but you don’t need a window for it.
Actually, we already have a ceiling fan installed, and the problem you describe is exactly why we don’t have A/C already. However, it was fairly unbearable last summer during the heat wave and the past few days have reminded us exactly how bad.
The ceiling fan is centered over the open space, not the bedroom, so we thought about installing a second ceiling fan, but we’re not sure if it will improve things significantly. We do have a curtain that can separate the bedroom from the floor below, so it might help keep cool air in….
If it’s an open loft arrangement, the cold air from an A/C would just plummet straight down to the lower level. Try circulating the air first, see if it’s more tolerable. I know ceiling fans not very fashionable these days, but they’re useful, and form follows function so install a large ceiling fan that will send the hot air down and circulate the air bringing some cool air up from below.
