I received a few estimates to repoint the facade of our 2 story brick home (20′ wide). I wanted to use Brownstone Authority but there estimate was $11,400. Everyone else was between $1000 and $4000. Am I crazy to think I can get the job done right for $2500?

  1. Hi, my name is Joanne and after reading your posting I got curious and gave Mr Moss a call.Asked for a brick facade pointing job and when I had the oportunity I told him about the $11,400 estimate. Small world he said.
That estimate included steam cleaning the brick painting the cornice and caulk the windows.A total facade restoration. I don’t know why he is saying it only included the brick pointing. That is not fare he said.
He did some great work in the block and he is getting mine too.

  2. from OP: I have no doubt in Brownstones rep or quality. I’m sure he would do the best job. He actually offered to negotiate when I told him it was too much. I was ready to pay top dollar for him, but I thought top dollar meant $5000 !

  4. I’m going to chime in and say that Jahan has done some very good restoration quality work on our front facade that included cutting our windows back to pre infill size and numerous mortar color tests at a price far below 11k… I would highly recomend Jahan.

  5. If a business is so busy they can charge two or three times more for the same work others can do, as Tom says, then there needs to be more such businesses in Brooklyn! Because it only means there isn’t enough competition in the marketplace. We are going to need pointing done too and there’s no way we can afford $11,000 (or even $9,000). So I’d love to hear who to call to point and paint the back of a house for under $5,000.

  6. I used Brownstone Authority as well and they do excellent work. I can assume part of the reason the bid is so high is the fact that they are extremely busy and have a big workload ahead of them. I had a 60′ x 30′ wall repointed by A. Malek for about 5 dollars a square foot ($9,000). It only took them about 4 days to grind out the mortar and another 2 days to repoint. It wasn’t a cosmetically challenging job because it was the side of the house. They were very good and showed up everyday until they finished.
Brownstone Authority did the brownstone facade (many details) and was excellent and took great pride in his (juan mos) work.

  7. Yes you are crazy to think $2500 for a 380 sq it’s OK.In the middle of the job they will ask you for more money or leave. But $11400 on the other hand is too much. Was there any more work included?

  8. The Brownstone authority bid may not be out of line. There is a big difference between one tuck pointing job and another. If your building has very thin grout lines between the bricks, I would spend money to keep that artisan feature which is the mark of a more expensive building. But it is not easy to scrape out the grout and it is even harder to repoint so that it comes out looking the same.
