I have to get an entire flat roof replaced, joists and all, after years of water damage and mold growth. Our architect arranged for an asbestos inspection and it turns out that we have it in our roof. Our dilemma now is that we can’t find a roofer who is also certified in asbestos abatement. Does anyone know of a good one? Thanks. Also, does anyone have any experience with Duca Roofing?

  1. do you mind if i ask what street your house is and what part of your roof contains asbestos ? was it found anywhere else in your house ? im doing a renovation in a brooklyn townhouse and curious what to expect….thanks !

  2. err not really recent but the NYC contact list might still be current.

the official city regulations still qualify abatement with “for compensation” but offer no info of abatement without compensation.

  3. I think the reason you are having trouble finding a roofer that is also certified in asbestos abatement is b/c most roofers will simply ‘look the other way’. Not sure what to suggest since you already had the inspection….

  4. Doesn’t matter if it is friable anymore.
All asbestos needs to be abated by a licensed company.

You need to hire someone to abate the asbestos, a roofer, and a carpenter (or a contractor to deal with all of this for you).

The work of all of these trades needs to be closely coordinated so one can follow the other.

As you are replacing the structure, you should file this job with the DOB.

  5. Is it friable? (no longer locked in a solid shape or otherwise liable to become airborne)

The rules are different for under 4 family residences doing it yourself or if you hire someone to do it. (Doing it yourself may not require an abatement company).
